What to Expect at First United Methodist Church
We understand that visiting a church for the first time can be an intimidating and awkward experience, or can be a wonderful gift and blessing. Having an idea about what to expect can help set your mind at ease. So, here we’ve tried to answer some common questions. If you have others, please don’t hesitate to contact the church office, or ask a greeter/usher upon your arrival.
What should I wear?
Some people enjoy dressing up for church. Others prefer jeans and a t-shirt. Either is fine. We just want you to feel comfortable worshipping with us.
Where should I park?
We have specially designated “Visitor” spaces in the parking lot diagonally opposite our historic sanctuary and opposite the H-E-B parking lot, but feel free to park anywhere. Here is a map to show you the various parking options. Click here to see the parking maps.
Where do I go?
If you are here with us for the first time, the simplest option is to come directly to the Activity Hall. Follow the signs and/or people to worship - and please don't hesitate to ask someone for directions. If you would like to bring your kids to childcare, just ask an usher/greeter at worship and they'll help direct you where to go.
Are children welcome in worship?
Worship is an important part of a child's spiritual growth and kids are always welcome in all of our church services. Even when the Holy Spirit blesses them with wiggly feet, hands, or mouths - they are a symbol of God's love and a reminder we are all children of God. We do have children's activity bags available that they are free to use during the service. These can be found in the mainentrance area, or ask an usher or greeter.
We also understand parents' need for worship - and we have wonderful childcare during our 9:45 and 11:00 services. Check out our children's ministry page for more information.
Is your order of worship easy to follow?
Yes. Upon entering the sanctuary you will be greeted and offered a bulletin with all the information needed for worship. We also use overhead projectors with clear graphics and words that help guide the service.
Will I be recognized during the service as a visitor?
You will not be asked to stand up or to wear a red ribbon, but you may be greeted and welcomed by any number of our church family, before or after worship. We do have cards for registering attendence and submitting prayer requests. We ask that you sign in as a guest and provide us some contact information. As a result of that, you will receive additional information from our church, a note during the week or possibly a phone call welcoming you back. Also, we have guest bags with information about our ministries, so be prepared to get a bag.
Can I participate in Holy Communion?
We believe that Holy Communion does not belong to a particular church or group - we are gathered around the Lord's table. You do not need to be a Methodist or a member of First UMC to receive the sacerement. Jesus Christ invites all who earnestly repent of their sins and seek a closer relationship with God to share this Mystery. Communion is celebrated on the first Sunday of each month at all worship services and every week at 8:15am and in other special worship services.
Do I have to join your church?
No, you do not have to join, you are always welcome to worship among us, participate in any of our activities and attend any of our study groups.
Membership is a choice and commitment which we want you to make only when the time is right for you. You can become a member by Baptism and Profession of Faith, or by Transfer from another United Methodist Church or another denomination. We believe that the Holy Spirit works within other churches and if you have previously been baptized we do not “re-baptize” you.
